Philip Sloper 1952-2022

Philip John Sloper was born in Birmingham on March 13th 1952, to Gladys and Harry Sloper. He grew up in Handsworth Wood along with his younger brother, Charles. Phil attended Grestone Avenue Primary School and Handsworth Technical College and would become the first ever student from the College to be accepted into Cambridge University. 

Phil attended Fizwilliam College, graduating in 1973 with a BA in Natural Sciences and after leaving university, he moved to Ilford, Essex, where he began a management training course at Delta Metals. A year later, he returned to Birmingham, where he joined refrigeration company Delta Cryo, becoming a General Manager in 1979. He retired in October 2014 after more than 35 years with the same company, having been promoted to Marketing Director and finally Managing Director.  

Throughout his life, Phil had many hobbies including sailing and windsurfing. He had a passion for classic cars and began competing in classic rallies with his friend, and fellow Cambridge alumnus, Steve Chick. He was also a talented photographer, winning awards for his work, which was exhibited nationwide. 

Throughout his retirement, Phil was an active member of both the Porsche Club and Midland Automobile Club, particularly enjoying attending hill climbs at Shelsley Walsh.  

Phil passed away in Russell’s Hall Hospital on June 26th, 2022, three years after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. He is survived by his wife Wendy and children, Michael and Emma.
